I read Pull Focus, a novel set in Toronto and written by Helen Walsh. Jane has been put in charge of the Toronto film festival. As the festival begins her significant other, a hedge fund manager, goes missing. Jane runs into trouble at all fronts. The Chinese government is pressuring her not to show a film by a Canadian filmmaker because it portrays their country accurately. The board chair of the film festival seems to be doing all he can to get her fired. The RCMP questions her about her partner's disappearance. Jane handles all these problems while attending cocktail parties and banquets and meetings. She has a concise manner of speaking that gets right to the point and I appreciate that. Jane is assertive and bold. I wouldn't say this book is a thriller but parts of it are thrilling. The author includes some background on Jane's childhood but it is inserted randomly and awkwardly. Overall it was an enjoyable read.
