The Awakening was written in 1899 and is listed as classic literature. Kate Chopin is the author. The story is set in New Orleans. The main character is Edna, a wife to Leonce and mother to two young boys. The family travels to Grand Isle for the summer while Leonce commutes to work during the week. At the beach Edna learns how to swim. A younger man, Robert, is there and he showers Edna with affection. In the fall Edna starts behaving differently. She isolates herself from the others in New Orleans society. Leonce travels to New York for business. As he leaves he takes the two sons to live with his parents. Edna suddenly has a lot of free time on her hands to think about her situation and her plans for the future. The story definitely has a feminist perspective. At the time many thought this book was vulgar and deplorable. Edna wasn't following the traditional gender norms. I liked the story of Edna who didn't think the way women were supposed to think.
