Open Water

Photo of us kayaking in Tasmania.
The ice went out on the Rum River yesterday.  All the puddles, footprints, snowmobile tracks, fallen leaves, and other debris got submerged.  What a shock to the ecosystem that must be when the ice breaks up and flows away.

Instant gush of oxygen to the water below,
Sudden brightness without the lid of snow.
The history of winter activity goes over the dam,
Waiting now for kayakers to paddle by again.
