Today I went to my aunt's funeral at St. Mary's Church in Alexandria. My aunt was a character. She was loud and talkative and flashy and outspoken and fashionable. She was difficult to get along with. I am not sure why she had the personality she did but she taught me an important lesson. At my job we had a difficult parent. This parent frustrated staff, social workers, family, and group home workers. But in my mind, she wasn't as bad as my Aunt G. I showed this woman extra patience and understanding. I laughed at her jokes. I listened to her stories. Turns out I liked her and she liked me. I took her son to visit her at the memory care unit in Brooklyn Park. He walked in. She stood up and said, "There is my beautiful son." She kissed him. Two weeks later she died. Thanks for the life lesson Aunt G.
