Still Life

Sarah Winman is the author of Still Life, a fiction novel that starts out in 1944 in Tuscany where bombs are falling from the sky. The young English soldier, Ulysses Temper, is the main character of the book. He meets a middle aged art historian named Evelyn Skinner. She has come to salvage paintings from destruction from the war. Their chance encounter and instant bonding change the events of Temper's life. Thirty years later, after a flood in Florence, Italy, Evelyn and Temper meet again and this time they bond a forge like a family. I enjoyed this book because it had kind characters and also villains. I enjoyed the description of the Italian dinners, the wine, the architecture, the sea shore, and the people. This book took a little over six hours to read but it was time well spent.
