James is a novel based on Huckleberry Finn's friend, Jim. Written by Percival Everett, the book starts out when James finds out his owner is going to sell him to a man in New Orleans which means he would leave his wife and daughter behind. James hides out on an island while he tries to formulate a plan. There he is discovered by Huckleberry who flees to the island to escape his violent father. Huckleberry isn't racist. Together they travel north via the river at night. James can't afford to be seen because his owners are searching for him. James hopes to get north and earn enough money to buy his wife and his daughter. Various white people take advantage of James along the way which was hard to read about. Most of the book is dialogue. I enjoyed reading about James and his motivations and his desires.
