LBJ Presidential Library

A guy on the beach the other day told me to visit the state capitol. He said it was worth it and the cost was free. The cost might be free but the parking ramp was nine dollars per hour. Forget about it! I can see it just fine from here. It's the building with the dome up there.

Then I went to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library. If your first or middle name is Lyndon you can get in free. I had to pay. This is a ten story library. Visitors can view floors 2, 3 and 10. The other floors are for staff or for storage of documents.

There was a special exhibit on Lady Bird Johnson. I went there first.

She had a college degree in history. Then she went back and got another degree in journalism.

The environment was very important to her.

Lady Bird's advice.

Lady Bird's mother embroidered this for the happy couple after the wedding. LBJ proposed on their first date. She said no. He pestered her constantly until two weeks later she agreed. LBJ had a persuasive personality.

LBJ had a heart attack while in office and had to rest for a couple of weeks. Here is a letter HHH wrote to him while he was recuperating.

The 1960's was a turbulent time.

He saved the ballet. He did more than I remembered him doing.

Take a gander at all the things he accomplished. He was a strategic thinker. For example, when Martin Luther King was assassinated LBJ said the best way to honor his legacy would be to pass the Civil Rights Acts as soon as possible. Seems like our recent presidents are happy to get two or three things accomplished.

This room is a replication of the Oval Office at a 7/8 scale. The furniture is his real furniture.

LBJ used words, humor, and intimidation to get what he wanted. He would breathe into people's faces, touch their lapels, or push on their chests. This was a common tactic for him.

This is Ladybird's office.

This is the limousine he bought after he left the White House.
