Fix What You Can

Mindy Greiling is a Minnesota state legislator from Roseville. She retired and wrote Fix What You Can: Schizophrenia and a Lawmaker's Fight For Her Son. I listened to the audio book. The author did not read the book. For the first half hour or so I thought the voice and the words were annoying but then I got into the story and was totally enthralled. Her voice and her words were not annoying. Her voice and her words were raw and real and authentic and desperate and so very sad. Greiling doesn't pull any punches. She talks about some very private information. She tears Regions Hospital to pieces and if what she said is true, and I believe it is true, Regions deserves to be lambasted. The fact that our mental health system is broken isn't news to me but just how broken it is was shocking. According to the author peace officers are often kinder and more sympathetic and helpful than mental health professionals.  If someone like an experienced state legislator doesn't have enough smarts and connections to get the proper care for her son, no one does. The fact that her son read this book for her and actually edited it three times makes me so sad because now he knows just how frustrated and heart broken she is about him.

Hallaway

I have only been to Maplewood State Park once before. The time of the year was autumn and we thought we could snag a campsite. Wrong. Despit...
