Meng Jin wrote the novel Little Gods. This is a story about migration. Su Lan leaves her village in the country to study in secondary school because she scored the highest in a nationwide test. Su Lan migrates from China to the United States to earn a Ph.D in physics. We hear about Su Lan from her husband, her neighbor who helped her babysit when her daughter, Liya, was born, and from Liya. We never hear Su Lan's side of her own story. It appears that Su Lan doesn't care what people think of her or her actions. She keeps her ancestry secret. In running away from what she dislikes, Su Lan ends up with more of the same and Liya is left with the consequences. I thought this was an interesting story about some of the smartest people in a Chinese class who haven't a clue how to start or keep a relationship.
