Madhuri Vijay wrote the award winning novel The Far Field. A privileged girl named Shalini has everything she could want yet she is so unhappy. Her mother and father confuse her. Her mother is often rude and loud to the point where little Shalini starts to take care of her instead of the other way around. A traveling salesman comes to visit them several times a year. As an adult, Shalini thinks this traveling salesman is the key to understanding why her mother behaved in such a strange manner. Shalini travels from her home in Bangalore to the northern parts of India that border the Himalayan mountains. Living in poverty, climbing those hills, milking cows and teaching children Shalini gradually changes from unhappy to neutral to some moments of pure joy. This book proves to me that travel to new places is super important for all of us. This book actually took me along with Shalini and I had a great time in the mountains.
